In the northern wastes, the mountains are alive — not with creatures, but with dreams. Mount Huan sleeps beneath the tundra, and its dreams take the form of wolves made of stone and snow. When the mountain begins to wake, the wolves grow bolder, and the boundaries between dream and reality begin to dissolve.
Bataar is a wolf-herder in the shadow of Mount Huan, where the mountains dream and their dreams walk as wolves of stone and ice. For generations, the people of the northern wastes have lived in equilibrium with the dream-wolves — respecting them, avoiding them during the mountain's restless cycles, and never, ever trying to wake the sleepers. But Bataar's daughter is sick with a wasting disease that only mountain-dream magic can cure, and the shamans say there's no hope. Desperate, Bataar does the unthinkable: he climbs Mount Huan to speak directly to the dreaming mountain. What he finds is not a sleeping god but a prison. The mountain isn't dreaming of wolves. The wolves are keeping something asleep. And Bataar's arrival is changing the balance.
